Managing child behavior and addressing increasing incidence of developmental delays, is a challenge for every teacher! Sensory impairments, motor delays and an array of confusing psychological disorders constitute ‘today’s child’. As the ‘gap’ in academic performance continues to widen, teachers everywhere are looking for efficient and effective tools and techniques to ensure literacy for all students. Zone’in and Move’in programs were designed by a school based pediatric occupational therapist to address sensory and motor problems in a classroom setting. Zone’in is derived from sensory integration theory, and is a self regulation program to teach children how to get their energy in the Zone to Learn. The Zone’in Concept of ‘energy in’ equaling ‘energy out’ will be emphasized. Move’in is based on fine motor development theory, and is an assessment and intervention for the motor skill components necessary to print and read. Printing as a foundation for literacy will be reviewed. The Zone’in and Move’in Training Workshop covers the topics of sensory integration and fine motor development, providing therapists, teachers and parents with essential foundation knowledge. Not only does this workshop profile the Zone’in and Move’in programs, but also offers numerous other sensory and motor strategies to improve attention, printing and reading skill. As technology overuse is a primary problem with today’s children, TV and videogame reduction tools and techniques will be reviewed and the new Unplug’in Game will be discussed.

Workshop Goal – information received in the Zone’in and Move’in Training Workshop will provide participants will essential tools and techniques to improve attention and printing and reading ability in all children.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify three critical factors for child development, and list five techniques to improve sensory and motor development.
  • Attain proficiency with Zone’in and Move’in program implementation.
  • Use the Zone’in Concepts to demonstrate ability to identify body energy zones and apply relevant Zone’in tools and techniques to get Zone’in to Learn.
  • Apply motor development knowledge and use the provided Foundation Scale for Grades K-6, to identify specific areas of motor impairment and apply relevant motor strategies to improve printing and reading skill.

The Zone’in Program optimizes attention by helping children to understand more about their body energy. If their energy is charged and hyperactive, or sleepy and zoned out, they can’t start, sustain or finish activities. By watching the Zone’in DVD, and using a Zone-O-Meter, tools and techniques, children learn to “Switch On” to get “Zone’in and Learn!”

The Move’in Program improves printing and reading by providing an assessment and intervention in the form of a board game, played in school or at home. Move’in comes with a web-based computer program that allows children to create their own custom journal and worksheets, and database for progress tracking and reports.
