Accommodating Technology frame of reference addresses the uncontrolled explosion of technology and resulting impairments in child development, and provides education regarding the evolution of human technology and alternatives to diagnosis and drugs. Why Can’t Children Sit Still? The Importance of Movement and Play for Child Development
Child Development frame of reference addresses child development delays and nature deficit, and provides education regarding the critical factors for healthy child development. Included are the Nature Directive, Child Development Directive and the Foundation Scales for Children handouts.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify three critical factors for infant, toddler and child development, and list ten techniques to improve connection and sensory and motor development.
  • Analyze current research on technology’s impact on child development, differentiate popular mental childhood diagnoses from TV and videogame addictions, recognize parent, teacher and physician trend to diagnose and drug behavior, and use the TV/VG Help Module and the Unplug – Don’t Drug Directive to reduce technology use.
  • Differentiate sensory impairment from behavior, and recognize sensory registration, modulation, and overload states; using the provided Sensory Observations and Strategies form, identify specific areas of sensory impairment and apply relevant sensorimotor strategies.
  • Analyze current research on the decline of printing instruction by teachers, the impact on literacy, and list three reasons why children need to learn to print to achieve literacy; using the Fine Motor Observations and Strategies form, recognize 13 critical factors for fine motor development of the eyes and hands, and list one intervention technique for each factor to improve printing and reading skill.
  • Using provided Foundation Scale for Children, rank individual performance levels, and using the Nature, Inner Drive, and Child Development Directives, and the Zone’in to Learn Classroom and Gym Designs, list ten creative intervention strategies to improve access to nature, enhance child development, and improve academic performance.
  • Using provided Attachment Questionnaire, identify your own attachment status and discover how to play again using the provided Things to Do When Not Watching TV and list three relevant techniques to improve connection with children.
  • Identify government, university, health and education system initiatives (two of each) to increase movement and play, and reverse the sedentary trend to not move.

Foundation Series Workshops are designed to be introductory level for therapists, intermediate for teachers and advanced for parents, child care workers and teaching assistants. Foundation Series Workshops course content includes the following AOTA Classification Codes for Continuing Education Activities: performance skills, areas of occupation, evaluation, intervention and outcomes.
