Separation anxiety

Hi Tracy,

I’m a pediatric occupational therapist and sensory specialist and would like to comment on separation anxiety.

The critical period for attachment with the primary caregiver is 0-7 months. Disruption or failure of infant-parent attachment results in an agitated and anxious child that exhibits high anxiety around separation.

A number of factors are gravely impacting establishment of healthy attachment in today’s society. 60% of mom’s don’t get maternity leave. 24% of children don’t have dad’s in the home. Parents spend 40% less time with their children than they did 15 years ago. Technology addictions (TV, videogames, internet, cell phones) are rampant.

I was just interviewed this morning by the Globe and Mail regarding a new TV and videogame addiction centre for children in Ontario, where I discussed what I term The Triple Disconnect of families from self, others and nature. Children who do not form healthy attachments with their parents, connect instead to technology.

I’ve attached a graphic of the critical factors for child development, and how when they are not met, result in mental disorders (separation anxiety) that is being readily diagnosed and treated with medication. Not a good thing.

Let me know if you want more.

Sincerely,

Cris Rowan, BScOT, BScBi, SIPT
