Innovative movement program for the classroom

Hi Julie,

I’m a pediatric occupational therapist and sensory specialist with expertise on the impact of technology on child health and academic performance, and would like to share with you a unique program I created for elementary classrooms called Zone’in that gets kids moving to learn. Zone’in is currently being used in all native schools in British Columbia, as well as many public school districts throughout Canada.

Zone’in is derived from sensory integration theory and follows the concept that children’s bodies are made of energy, and that energy needs to be in the Zone to learn. If body energy is too hyper, or too zoned out, kids can’t pay attention or learn. To get body energy in the Zone, children need to move. I’ve attached a Zone-O-Meter, which is how kids measure their energy, and also how they know if a certain tool or technique worked to get them Zone’in to learn. In my prototype testing I found that every movement technique had a different effect on different children e.g. some movements made kids more hyper, or some made kids more sleepy. I developed the Zone’in Concept so that children can learn to self regulate their own energy, and choose techniques that work for them.

I’ve also attached the Zone’in Energy Concept handout I used in workshops.

Let me know if you’d like to talk further?

Have a GREAT day!

Sincerely,
