Addressing videogame addictions in children

Hi Mark,

I’m the pediatric occupational therapist from Zone’in Programs Inc. whom you interviewed a few summers back regarding the effects of TV and videogame use in children.

The unfortunate disappearance of Brandon Crisp in Ontario has resulted in numerous emails and phone calls from reporters, teachers and parents regarding what parents can do to safely get their children to reduce videogame use.

I’ve subsequently put together the following 10 steps to successfully unplug children from videogames for our November 2008 Zone’in Development Series Newsletter.

If CBC is interested, I would be happy to offer your listeners complementary access, or participate in a radio interview to answer questions. I’ve also developed an addiction questionnaire for children, derived from the DSM IV – category of addictions.

I’ve contacted the Education Ministries regarding school implementation of an annual Technology Reduction Week, as well as have a meeting this Friday with Dan Buteau, Coordinator of Elementary and Secondary Programs with the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help CBC address the concerns of parents of children with technology addictions.

Sincerely,

Cris Rowan, BScOT, BScBi, SIPT, Approved Provider AOTA and CAOT
