Disney refunds Baby Einstein DVD’s – false advertising!

Accusations from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) citing false advertising, and pressure from the American Academy of Pediatrics that ‘baby TV’ is not educational and is detrimental to development, has forced Disney to agree to refund $15.99 for up to four Baby Einstein DVD’s purchased between the dates June 5, 2004 and September 4, 2009.

Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood (CCFC) was instrumental in lobbying the FTC to address false advertising of Baby Einstein DVD’s, and below letter from FTC to Baby Einstein lawyer clearly delineates FTC’s concerns.

Possibly a next step would be for the technology production corporations to place ‘child risk’ warnings on products informing parents of detrimental effects of overuse of their products?

The Source Forum – NOW IN OPERATION

Cris Rowan, pediatric occupational therapist has launched a new forum on her website www.zonein.ca called The Source.

The Source is a forum designed to raise conscious awareness about the impact of technology use on children.

Providing an opportunity to stimulate debate and share ideas, The Source will serve as an agent of change in the lives of everyone who chooses to participate.

Every week we will post a new category, and every day a new topic and question. Participants are allowed to post their own questions, comments will not be screened – all opinions will be posted.

Cris Rowan has been invited by Dr. Michael Rich, Pediatrician and Director of the Center on Media and Child Health www.cmch.tv to work on a joint documentary on the impact of technology on children.

Gavin Thompson, Director of Microsoft Canada’s Corporate Citizenship has invited Cris to consult on their new gaming platform Natal regarding modifications to optimize child development.

Dr. Holly Agostino, pediatric researcher with McGill University will be co-authoring with Cris on a commentary for the Canadian Family Physician journal regarding a physician directed routine family technology history.

Zone’in Programs Inc. is awarding Balanced Technology Management Champion Status (BTMCS) to governments, health units, schools, and technology production corporations who show innovative ways to get children to practice balanced technology use. BTMCS offers the organization an opportunity to partner with Zone’in Programs Inc. on future initiatives, as well as post BTM Champion Status on website.

All First Nations Schools in British Columbia recently received Zone’in and Move’in Programs and Workshops, organized by the First Nations Education Steering Committee. Cris Rowan was offered a unique opportunity to travel to a small northern native village, and provide school based teacher workshops and student consultations. Keep reading here.

Zone’in Programs Inc. is seeking research support and assistance for a pilot study of the Creating Sustainable Futures Program, a school based intervention to improve child health and academic performance through balanced technology management initiatives. The Creating Sustainable Futures Program offers Products and Workshops to elementary schools, implemented by Training certified occupational therapy instructors.
